LAW AND JUSTICE IN TANZANIA: Quarter of a Century of the Court of AppealLAW AND JUSTICE IN TANZANIA: Quarter of a Century of the Court of Appeal
Peter, Chris Maina & Kijo-Bisimba, Helen (Eds.)

The Tanzania Court of Appeal was established in 1979 following the winding up of the East African Court of Appeal: one of the consequences of the collapse of the East African Community in 1977. For the past quarter of a century Tanzania’s Court of Appeal has been the last hope of those seeking justice in Tanzania; and these essays address whether the Appeal Court has met the expectations of the millions of Tanzania seeking redress and examine the record of its performance in the delivery of justice, in separation of powers and in the development of democratic practices in Tanzania and in other Commonwealth countries. 404pp, TANZANIA. TANZANIA: The Legal Foundations of The Union - Second EditionTANZANIA: The Legal Foundations of The Union - Second Edition
Shivji, Issa G.

First published in 1990, this study provided the first detailed analysis of the fundamental legal foundations of the union in 1964 between Tanganyika and Zanzibar which led to the birth of the United Republic of Tanzania. Used by students of law, politics and the Tanzania union as a basic reference work the book is a product of wide-ranging scholarship and close analysis of legal texts that constitute the primary sources of the Union, and the author's long engagement with the morality of constitutional politics that bear on Zanzibar’s status in the Union. Out of print for over a decade, this second, expanded edition includes a few minor revisions, comments and references have been put in square brackets to distinguish them from the original text. 150pp, TANZANIA. TAX COMPLIANCE IN TANZANIA: Analysis of Law and Policy Affecting Voluntary Taxpayer Compliance
Ongwamuhana, Kibuta

Examines the problems of low-level tax compliance in Tanzania. It proceeds from the premise that high-level taxpayer compliance is essential to the success of the tax system. The author argues convincingly that tax enforcement alone (namely, detection and punishment of tax delinquency), will not of itself lead to high-level tax compliance. He posits that there exists a strong link between good governance and taxpayer compliance; tax compliance levels reflecting effectiveness of tax administration, taxpayer attitudes towards taxation and towards government in general. The book focuses primarily on tax compliance in Tanzania, but it also examines relevant data from the neighbouring countries of Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, and Zambia, which have undergone tax administration reforms similar to Tanzania and are equally concerned with tax compliance. 250pp, TANZANIA. MKUKI NA NYOTA PUBLISHERS.
