THE AFRICAN-ASIAN DIVIDE: Analyzing Institutions and Accumulation in Kenya
Vandenberg, Paul

Why have Africans not gained a more dominant position in urban manufacturing in Kenya? This question is explored through an analysis of the institutions, both formal and informal, that have affected patterns of capital accumulation in Kenya by the African and Asian (Indian) communities. The analysis is supported by the results of a contemporary survey of 120 manufacturing firms in Nairobi’s metal sector that highlight the division between smaller African firms and larger Asian ones. 240pp, UK. BURYING S M: The Politics of Knowledge and the Sociology of Power in Africa
Cohen, David William & Odhiambo, E.S.Atieno

The death of S.M. Otieno, a distinguished Kenyan lawyer led to an unprecedented legal dispute revolving over the issue of his remains. His wife wanted to bury him according to modern customs in Nairobi, while the Umira Kager clan and their representatives wanted him buried at his birthplace in western Kenya. It seemed that the entire country, from the cities to the countryside, were debating the legal, social, cultural issues that should govern burial, the rights of wives, the nature of marriage and family, and the meaning of `Kenyan', `Luo' and `modern'. THE GENERAL ELECTIONS IN KENYA, 2007

The coalition government took shape with Mwai Kibaki remaining President while Raila Odinga became the Prime Minister. The country however remains in suspense, as do the donors who had made it possible for Kenya to restore a semblance of peace. But to what point will they be interested in investing in the country and to protect their place in it? 396pp, TANZANIA. MKUKI NA NYOTA PUBLISHERS.

KENYA: Policies for ProsperityKENYA: Policies for Prosperity
Adam, Christopher, Collier, Paul & Ndung'u, Njuguna (Eds.)

Kenya has experienced a period of high and sustained growth since the mid 1990s, growth that has involved economic transformation away from a heavy reliance on traditional economic activities towards an emerging manufacturing economy. But this process, and the economic and social stability that had come to characterize Kenya, have been severely tested by the post-election violence of 2008. Restoring equitable growth and sustaining the structural transformation of the economy is essential if Kenya is to leave this period behind. The chapters in this volume address the key issues that will face economic policy makers in the coming years. They cover the conventional but central questions of finance and macroeconomic management, but also much deeper structural issues of trade, employment generation and education; of land policy, migration and urbanization; and the fiscal challenges facing an ageing but increasingly urbanized, and increasingly affluent, society. 428pp, USA. KENYA: The Struggle for DemocracyKENYA: The Struggle for Democracy
Murunga, Godwin R. & Nasong'o, Shadrack (Eds.)

The path towards democracy in Kenya has been long and often tortuous. Though it has been trumpeted as a goal for decades, democratic government has never been fully realised, largely as a result of the authoritarian excesses of the Kenyatta, Moi and Kibaki regimes. This uniquely comprehensive study of Kenya's political trajectory shows how the struggle for democracy has been waged in civil society, through opposition parties, and amongst traditionally marginalised groups like women and the young. It also considers the remaining impediments to democratisation, in the form of a powerful police force and damaging structural adjustment policies. Index, bib, 344pp, UK. ZED BOOKS.

KENYA'S UNCERTAIN DEMOCRACY: The Electoral Crisis of 2008
Kagwanja, Peter & Southall, Roger (Eds.)

The plunging of Kenya, until recently a centre of stability and growth in East Africa, into political and economic uncertainty following the general election of December 2007 is regarded as a major cause for global and African concern. It is widely accepted that the elections were deeply flawed, and that there was electoral malfeasance by all the major players. President Kibaki's rapid declaration of victory in the face of a heavily disputed election and his determination to hold on to the levers of state power precipi-tated a deadly crisis, communal violence and economic decline. This book takes a new look at the 2007 election, the post-election crisis, the underlying interaction of ethnicity, class and political power; forced displacement, the role of international forces; and the country’s power-sharing arrangement. 214pp, UK. MODERN LOCAL GOVERNMENT IN KENYA

NAIROBI TODAY: The Paradox of a Fragmented CityNAIROBI TODAY: The Paradox of a Fragmented City
Charton-Bigot, Hélène & Rodriguez-Torres, Deyssi (Eds.)

Despite being a large capital city in Africa in terms of size and its regional role, Nairobi is an unrecognised entity. For the majority of its inhabitants, the capital of Kenya is a transit point rather than a dwelling place. Since its origins, Nairobi has been a city of migrants, more predisposed to their rural roots than to their current city status. It is a nonconforming town, which conceals its urbanity more than it claims it, and whose identity remains evasive. Nairobi presents itself as a mosaic of residential areas which bring to mind the citys history. The racial segregation that stratified the development of the colonial city has today disappeared, but it has given way to a form of social segregation. One must, therefore, not seek a unique identity in Nairobi, but rather, several identities - those of different communities that comprise the city and whose dynamics are seen at village and residential estate level. 404pp, TANZANIA. PARTICIPATORY DEVELOPMENT IN KENYAPARTICIPATORY DEVELOPMENT IN KENYA
Mwanzia, Josephine Syokau & Strathdee, Robert Craig

Participatory Development (PDev) has been embraced by Third World governments and international organizations such as the World Bank as a means to reduce poverty and empower disadvantaged communities. The emphasis on creating partnerships and using participatory and people-centred approaches has obvious political appeal, yet there is evidence that in practice interventions designed to increase PDev and reduce poverty have yet to have the desired empowerment, transformation and sustainability effect. Using an in-depth study of the Basic Education Improvement Project (BEIP) implemented by the Government of Kenya, the authors of this book critically assess the fit between policy, practice and theory of PDev to shed light on theoretical debates that are on-going in development. 200pp, UK. PRIVATISATION AND PRIVATE HIGHER EDUCATION IN KENYA: Implications for Access, Equity and Knowledge Production
Oanda, Ibrahim Ogachi & Chege, Fatuma N.

Over the last decade, the privatisation of public universities and the growth in the number of accredited private universities have increased steadily in Kenya. The growth in the private university sector has been more in the number of institutions than in the volume of students, while in the public universities, privatisation has resulted in increased number of private students, whose enrolment in some institutions and programmes surpass the number of students on government sponsorship. This book addresses the implications of this development, exploring the responsiveness of private higher education to issues of broadening access, equity and the traditional research function of universities. 120pp, SENEGAL. Kibicho, Wanjobi

Illustrated by in-depth empirical research from Kenya - one of the most popular country destinations in Africa for sex tourism - this book gathers much-needed statistics and data, and then critically examines the features of tourism and the sex trade, contextualizing this in relation to tourism development. It addresses the conditions which generate this 'social problem' and, while not taking a potentially problematic moralistic stance it questions whether this trade is exploitative in nature, particularly in cases of child sex tourism. It then critically evaluates the current policies in place to regulate the sex tourism industry and provides suggestions for future direction. 248pp, UK. ASHGATE.

TRANSFORMING EDUCATION AND DEVELOPMENT POLICIES FOR PASTORALIST COMMUNITIES IN KENYA
Oanda, Ibrahim Ogachi

Sets out to explore how pastoralist IKS s (Indigenous Knowledge Systems) can be integrated or used as an entry point to provide formal schooling to pastoralist communities in Kenya. Pastoralists constitute the majority of the socially and economically vulnerable groups in the country. Children, among pastoralist communities, face detrimental hardships that compromise their growth and development. One of these hardships is the imposition of an education and development paradigm that is irrelevant to their existence and which compounds their problems. This study therefore sought to explore how, through better government policies, the indigenous knowledge (IK ) of pastoralists could be integrated into the curriculum of formal schooling. 148pp, ETHIOPIA.
