Online Catalogue:BROWSE BY COUNTRY AND REGION:THE HORN OF AFRICA
Examination of the efforts by international jihadists to bring about their grand vision of Islamist hegemony in the greater Horn of Africa region. These efforts began with the collaboration between Al Qaeda and the National Islamic Front (NIF) government of Sudan. The NIF under the ideological leadership of Hasan al-Turabi and Al Qaeda under Osama bin Laden sought to channel the social, political and economic grievances of Muslim communities into a global jihadist narrative, and the NIF and Al Qaeda worked hand in glove to set up and/or support several, co-ordinated jihadist movements in the countries of Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Tanzania and Uganda. The combined Al Qaeda-NIF regional onslaught bequeathed a legacy of proxy wars and terrorism against Eritrea, Ethiopia and Uganda and Al Qaeda terror operations in Kenya and Tanzania. Argues that when Carter assumed U.S. presidency in 1977, he stepped into an office still struggling with the aftermath of the Vietnam War and the Watergate scandal. As president, he had to administer his foreign policy and fight the Cold War within the limits imposed by both. With the option of traditional military recourse essentially closed to Carter, he redirected American foreign policy to challenge the Soviet Union on a moral level, emphasizing regionalism and human rights. Carter's foreign policy in the Horn of Africa demonstrates his attempt to regain trust and confidence of Americans in the presidency, along issues of human rights abuses, Cold War concerns and the violation of international law. Reconceptualises Sudanic Africa to include the Ethiopian highlands in the East. It argues that to fully understand this belt of the continent, one must understand the relations between the rulers and their primary producers, either herders or farmers. Using documents dating back to the 13th century, it recalls attention to the role of the state and focuses on the relations between rulers and ruled. Index, 274pp, USA. AFRICA WORLD PRESS.

Argues that refugee migration has not only resulted from the social (re)construction of the state as territorial sovereign entity but also from the (re)construction of the international states-system with all its injustices, inequalities, exploitation and uneven development within which Africa has seriously been marginalized. The refugee is an integral part of state and identity construction, the art of imagining and socially producing the state's territorial universal order. Thus, in order to understand the refugee crisis better it is imperative to understand the process of modern statecraft and the role it plays in the production of refugees and vice versa. The result: a cold peace that could degenerate into open warfare at any time. This book brings together contributions from Patrick Gilkes, Lionel Cliffe and Richard Reid, among others, and includes original documents, some previously unpublished. Index, maps, 294pp, USA. Images of war, narratives of suffering and notions of ethnicity are intrinsically linked to Western perceptions of Africa. Filtered through a mostly international media the information of African wars is confined to narrow categories of explanation emerging from and adapted to a Western history and political culture. This book aims at reversing this process; to look at war and suffering from the point of view of those who fight it and suffer through it. In doing so it reveals that the simplistic models explaining contemporary wars in Africa which are reproduced in a Western discourse are basically false. This book examines the understanding of war and the impact of warfare on the formation and conceptualization of identities in Ethiopia. Building on historical trajectories of enemy images, the recent Eritean-Ethiopian war (1998-2000) is used as an empirical backdrop to explore war's formative impact, by analysing politics of identity and shifting perceptions of enemies and allies. 256pp, UK. JAMES CURREY PUBLISHERS.
