CURRENTS OF CONTRAST: Life in Southern Africa's Two Oceans
Peschak, Thomas P.

Southern Africa's coast is the meeting place of two ocean giants: the Benguela current of the Atlantic Ocean and the Agulhas of the Indian Ocean. They clash fiercely at the continents southern tip, dividing the region into two contrasting marine ecosystems that rank among the richest, most biologically diverse and oceanographically complex on the planet. The waters of the west coast are fed by the Benguela, a cold current that accounts for the enormous volume of marine life found here, while those of the east coast warmed by the Agulhas current are noted for their huge variety of life forms. Photographs appearing in this book were taken specifically for the publication and many feature phenomena never seen or photographed before. Index, bib, 200pp, SOUTH AFRICA. STRUIK. 1770070869

DEMOCRACY COMPROMISED: Chiefs and the politics of the land in South AfricaDEMOCRACY COMPROMISED: Chiefs and the politics of the land in South Africa
Ntsebeza, Lungisile

Addresses two integrally related questions. First, how despite their role in the apartheid state, traditional authorities have not only survived, but have won unprecedented powers in rural governance in South Africa's democracy, and, secondly, how they derive their authority. It argues that chieftaincy has always been contested and that it has throughout its history since the advent of colonialism been dependent on the support of the state. The role of traditional authorities in the land allocation process is central to our understanding, not only of their survival, but on how they derived their authority. 326pp, NETHERLANDS. THE FRIGHTENED LAND: Land, Landscape and Politics in South Africa in the Twentieth CenturyTHE FRIGHTENED LAND: Land, Landscape and Politics in South Africa in the Twentieth Century
Beningfield, Jennifer

An investigation into the spatial politics of separation and division in South Africa, principally during the apartheid years, and the effects of these physical and conceptual barriers on the land. In contrast to the weight of literature focusing on post-apartheid South Africa, the focus of this book includes the spatial, political and cultural landscape practices of the apartheid government and also refers to contemporary work done in Australia, England and the US. It probes the uncertainty and ambiguity of identities and cultures in post-apartheid society in order to gain a deep understanding of the history that individuals and society now confront. 352pp, UK. GAINING GROUND: Property and Rights in South Africa's Land ReformGAINING GROUND: Property and Rights in South Africa's Land Reform
James, Deborah

Examines how land reform policy and practice in post-apartheid South Africa have been produced and contested. Set in the province of Mpumalanga, the book gives an ethnographic account of local initiatives and conflicts, showing how the poorest sectors of the landless have defied the South African state's attempts to privatize land holdings and create a new class of African farmers. They insist that the 'rights-based' rather than the 'market-driven' version of land reform should prevail and that land restitution was intended to benefit all Africans. However their attempts to gain land access often backfire. Despite state assurances that land reform would benefit all, illegal land selling and 'brokering' are pervasive. GOING FOR BROKE: The fate of farm workers in arid South Africa
Atkinson, Doreen

Timely analysis of a forgotten part of South African society, who live on remote arid farms, or who have become unemployed in recent years and have drifted to the towns and cities. It takes the question of farm workers' fortunes beyond the heated land ownership debate, to consider their current and future livelihood, and argues that the question is part of a broader spectrum of economic and social questions. Where should farm workers live? Should rural-urban migration be encouraged? What kind of job prospects can be fostered? How can their participation in the rural and peri-urban economy be promoted? Do farm workers need land, or jobs, or municipal services? Index, bib, notes, 302pp, SOUTH AFRICA. HUMAN SCIENCES RESEARCH COUNCIL.

THE LAND QUESTION IN SOUTH AFRICA: The Challenge of Transformation and Redistribution
Ntsebeza, Lungisile & Hall, Ruth (Eds.)

The extent to which indigenous people were dispossessed of their land by whites in South Africa under colonial rule and apartheid has no parallels on the African continent. Since the advent of democracy in 1994, issues at the heart of the land question in South Africa are how to reverse this phenomenon and how a large-scale redistribution of land can contribute to the transformation of the economy and the reduction of poverty, both rural and urban. NATURES OF COLONIAL CHANGE: Environmental Relations in the Making of the TranskeiNATURES OF COLONIAL CHANGE: Environmental Relations in the Making of the Transkei
Tropp, Jacob A.

In the late nineteenth century, South Africa’s Cape Colony completed its incorporation of the area beyond the Kei River, known as the Transkei, and began transforming the region into a labour reserve. It simultaneously restructured popular access to local forests, reserving those resources for the benefit of the white settler economy. This placed new constraints on local Africans in accessing resources for agriculture, livestock management, hunting, building materials, fuel, medicine, and ritual practices. Drawing from a diverse array of oral and written sources, Tropp reveals how bargaining over resources between and among colonial officials, chiefs and headmen, and local African men and women was interwoven with major changes in local political authority, gendered economic relations, and cultural practices as well as with intense struggles over the very meaning and scope of colonial rule itself. 282pp, USA. THE RISE OF CONSERVATION IN SOUTH AFRICA: Settlers, Livestock, and the Environment, 1770-1950
Beinart, William

New in paperback. Beinart's major theme is the history of conservationist ideas in South Africa. He focuses largely on the livestock farming districts of the semi-arid Karoo and the neighbouring eastern Cape grasslands, conquered and occupied by white settlers before the middle of the nineteenth century. The Cape, like Australia, became a major exporter of wool. Vast numbers of sheep flooded its plains and rapidly transformed its fragile natural pastures. Cattle also remained vital for ox-wagon transport and internal markets. Concerns about environmental degradation reached a crescendo in the early decades of the twentieth century, when a Dust Bowl of kinds was predicted, and formed the basis for far-reaching state intervention aimed at conserving natural resources. Soil erosion, overstocking, and water supplies stood alongside wildlife protection as the central preoccupations of South African conservationists. The book traces debates about environmental degradation in successive eras of South African history. It offers a reinterpretation of South Africa's economic development, and of aspects of the Cape colonial and South African states. Index, bib, maps, tables, charts, 425pp, UK. SCORCHED: South Africa's Changing Climate
Joubert, Leonie

Journey through southern Africa's mesmerising landscapes as climate change sets in: from the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, to capture the last faltering calls of a rain frog that was named after the hobbit Bilbo Baggins, to the wading birds of the West Coast, into the high Arctic tundra for their annual breeding season, before returning to a Cape which is crisping over as drought continues to grip the province. These plants and animals, many of which are unique to the region, continue to do what their ancestors have done for millions of years. Yet the world is shifting its shape around them. In places it is warming and drying, elsewhere the rains come in greater deluges. Some are abandoned by the other plants and animals with which they have cohabited, as species retreat before the onslaught of altered weather patterns. THE SOUL OF THE APETHE SOUL OF THE APE
Marais, Eugene

This is a new edition of this important work, which was first published in 1969, 33 years after Marais's death. Although he worked on this book during the last years of his life and told friends at the time that he considered it to be his masterpiece, the manuscript was considered lost for many years. Eugene Marais was the first man to conduct a prolonged study of primates in the wild. His study of the chacma baboons in Northern Transvaal's Waterberg led him to the conclusion that mankind's unconscious mentality is in fact the primitive, instinctive mind or psyche, which in the evolutionary process has been crowded out by the development of a reasoning intellect. With an introduction by Robert Ardrey (author of ‘African Genesis’). 192pp, SOUTH AFRICA. HUMAN & ROUSSEAU.

SOUTH AFRICAN PLECTRANTHUSSOUTH AFRICAN PLECTRANTHUS
Van Jaarsveld, Ernst

The indigenous Plectranthus from the Southern forests and savannahs are among the gems of South African flora. They are also the answer to every gardener's dream in their natural ability to cope with difficult conditions, above all, shade. In this definitive account for gardeners, indigenous plant enthusiasts, botanists and plant lovers, Ernst van Jaarsveld brings together every-thing known about these plants and tells us how to grow them, while Vicki Thomas' delightful watercolours recreate their charm on the page. The group's environmental adaptations, ethnic uses, natural reproduction and distribution in southern Africa are also covered, and a key simplifies the species' identification. Notes on each species explain the derivation of the botanical name and give a short description of the plant, including its flowering time, diagnostic features, habitat and cultivation. 176pp, SOUTH AFRICA.
