The second part of a trilogy, charting the history of mine workers and their place in development of the South African state and the economy. Surveys developments from the establishment of the Apartheid state to 1982 when it was being challenged in the mines, factories and townships. After the Soweto Revolt, the government slowly began to compromise and by 1982 the conditions were present for the formation of a new union for black mineworkers. Covers labour recruitment, harsh working conditions and work-related deaths and injuries, including a detailed account of the Coalbrook Colliery disaster in 1960 when 437 were killed. Detailed study of the wave of dissent by black students and industrial workers that arose in the 1970s. When black mineworkers joined the protesters in 1973-1976, more than 200 were killed. These protests were followed by the Soweto uprising, by township violence and by a state response that was both oppressive and conciliatory. 24 illus, xx, 491pp, UK. MERLIN PRESS.

Universally domestic workers have been a marginalized sector of the workforce, increasingly feminized and whose working lives often reflect abuse, degradation and exploitation. Set within the context of post-apartheid South Africa, the author examines the lives of women in domestic service to discover whether the dismantling of apartheid has ameliorated the poor pay and conditions of this marginalized workforce. Following on from Jacklyn Cock's seminal work Maids and Madams, the author draws on research carried out in the Eastern Cape and places these workers in the wider societal context in order to examine their 'quality of life' in addition to their 'quality of work'. 205pp, UK. ASHGATE PUBLISHERS.

Argues that the co-option of organised (white) labour was decisive in the formation of a symbiotic relationship between state and capital that persisted throughout the apartheid era. Black trade unions in South Africa played a central part in the history of the struggle against white domination. Always a militant union, the South African Railway and Harbour Workers' Union has been, from its founding in 1936, at the forefront of the struggle. During the apartheid years, records and documents belonging to the union were constantly destroyed. A Fighting Union is therefore the only historical record of the times. As well as providing a factual history recording the experiences of some of the thousands of people who belonged to SARHWU - workers on the railways and dockyards, cleaners, administrators and activists, it makes an important contribution to people's history and looks forward to the consolidation of transport workers' unions in the 21st century. 196pp, SOUTH AFRICA. This book explores rural politics in South Africa from the 1930s to the 1980s, with the focus on the former Pedi kingdom but addressing a broader set of issues about African societies forced onto the reserves. Delius shows how rural peasants and migrant workers coped with the impact of apartheid, comparing the 1958 armed revolt to the violent action by youthful 'comrades' thirty years later, a struggle to purge local communities of oppression and misfortune which however led to an orgy of 'witchcraft' killings. The third volume of a trilogy, charting the history of mine workers and their place in development of the South African state and the economy. Covers the formation of the National Union of Mineworkers in 1982, its aim for solidarity amongst mineworkers, opposition from the Chamber of Mines and the struggle for survival after the strike defeat by the Anglo American Corporation in 1987. As the crisis of Apartheid intensified the NUM played a crucial role in winning support for both the African National Congress and the South African Communist Party. It aided both organisations by re_creating their infrastructures through the provision of accommodation, national and local officials and financing. Key areas covered by this volume include: the human costs of mining, housing, women, HIV/AIDS and the ongoing impact of Asbestosis compensation claims. Focuses heavily too on the NUM and the crisis in Apartheid, the formation of COSATU, its adoption of the Freedom Charter and the emergence of Workerism, violence and assassinations in eastern Transvaal and KwaZulu Natal. Discusses mine disasters, strikes and violent internecine struggles, political conflicts and developments leading to the first democratic election in 1994.
