THE AFRICAN NATURALIST: The Life and Times of Rodney Carrington Wood, 1889-1962THE AFRICAN NATURALIST: The Life and Times of Rodney Carrington Wood, 1889-1962
Happold, David

Wood spent 50 years mainly in Nyasaland (now Malawi) studying and collecting mammals, birds, fish, insects, shells and plants. After a good education, he turned his back on the formalities of life in England and became a cotton farmer in Africa. He never settled - always looking for new challenges and experiences. At various times, he owned a tea estate, was the first Game Warden of Nyasaland, a school teacher, and finally a beach-comber in the Sey-chelles. He was also a tracker and hunter who preferred to hunt with a bow and arrow rather than with a gun. Throughout his career, collecting in the most meticulous and scientific fashion was his all-absorbing passion. His valuable collections are now in prestigious museums and several species have been named after him, and yet his name is almost unknown except to the most ardent lovers of African natural history. Index, col photos, 290pp, UK. BOOK GUILD.

COLONIALISM TO CABINET CRISIS: A Political History of Malawi
Ross, Andrew C.

The late Andrew C. Ross was a Scottish missionary in Malawi between 1958 and 1965 and one of the founding members of the Malawi Congress Party. He deeply opposed the Central African Federation, and was a strong supporter of the emerging Malawian nationalist movement. When, following the declaration of a State of Emergency in March 1959, many of the political leaders of the Nyasaland African Congress were detained, Ross regularly visited those held at Kanjedza near Limbe - visits which helped to deepen both his friendship with them, and his commitment to their cause. When Orton Chirwa was released from detention later in 1959, and persuaded to become the temporary leader of the newly formed Malawi Congress Party, Andrew Ross was one of the first to join it, becoming the proud holder of MCP card number six. Includes a Foreword by Professor George Shepperson. 256pp, MALAWI. KACHERE SERIES.

CONTRADICTIONS IN POST-WAR EDUCATION POLICY FORMATION AND APPLICATION IN COLONIAL MALAWI, 1945-1961CONTRADICTIONS IN POST-WAR EDUCATION POLICY FORMATION AND APPLICATION IN COLONIAL MALAWI, 1945-1961
Lamba, Isaac Chikwekwere

Discusses the impact on education, generally, of the Nyasaland Post-War Development Programme, the Colonial Office Commissions of 1947, 1951 and 1961, and the local Committees set up to inquire into the retardation of African education in its various categories, including female and Muslim, in response to both local and international pressure. Argues that, although considered a priority, African education developed slowly, contrary to the declared goal of colonial policy of self-determination with its potential demands for trained local manpower. 330pp, MALAWI. THE ROAD TO TANGANYIKA
McCarthy, James

Donald Munro and William McEwan were engineers who worked on the construction of the Stevenson Road in Nyasaland, now Malawi, in the Nineteenth Century. The road was one of the most ambitious projects of the imperial dream: to link territories with British interests by building commercial trade routes through East and central Africa. The Stevenson Road aimed to link Lake Nyasa with Lake Tanganyika in order to reach the Indian Ocean. This volume brings together extracts from the explorers' diaries accompanied by a narrative situating the texts in geographical, historical and socio-political context. Maps, b/w illus, 150pp, MALAWI. KACHERE SERIES.
