DEFORESTATION AND REFORESTATION IN NAMIBIA: The Global Consequences of Local Contradictions
Kreike, Emmanuel

Descriptions of the late 1800s landscape in the Ovambo floodplain in north-central Namibia closely match the areas late 1900s appearance, suggesting that little change occurred between the pre-colonial baseline and the postcolonial outcome. Yet, paradoxically, colonial conquest, population pressure, biological invasions, new technology, and economic globalization caused both dramatic deforestation and reforestation in less than a century. The paradox stems from the fact that the prevailing global environmental models obscure and homogenize the process of environmental change: different and contradictory interpretations are dismissed as alternative readings or misreadings of the same process. This book, however, argues that the paradox highlights the need to reframe environmental change as plural processes occurring along multiple trajectories that may be dis-synchronized and asymmetrical. 226pp, NETHERLANDS. HAI//OM IN THE ETOSHA REGION: A History of Colonial Settlement, Ethnicity and Nature Conservation
Dieckmann, Ute

The Etosha Region in Namibia, comprising the famous Etosha National Park and its adjacent communal and commercial farm lands, has been a contested region since the advent of colonial settlement. The centenary of the Etosha Park in 2007 provides an opportune moment for critical reflection on its history. At the centre of this book are the Hai||om San and their long history of dispossession and discrimination. Ute Dieckmann analyses with care the historical transformations. These were linked not only to the creation of one of the largest nature conservation areas in Africa but also to the establishment of a settler state and society. TREE ATLAS OF NAMIBIATREE ATLAS OF NAMIBIA
Curtis, Barbara & Mannheimer, Coleen

Presents the distribution and estimated abundance of over 400 species of woody plants in Namibia. It is the culmination of six years of data collection by volunteers with a keen interest in trees and is one of two products of the Namibian Tree Atlas Project. Over 300 distribution maps show where the major species are found, while graphs depict their height and habitat, and when each species has leaves, flowers or fruit. Although not intended as a field guide, this book gives a brief description of each species, highlighting the most distinguishing features, and illustrates most species with a line drawing of the leaves and flowers or fruit. Notes are included on general biology, uses and conservation concerns. 674pp, NAMIBIA. NATIONAL BOTANICAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE.
